Ugly Stik Reviews

Not all reviews are reliable, but usually when you start to see a trend in reviews and ratings, you can look to the pattern for a good idea of the quality of a product. You can also look for common praise, issues, and complaints to help you decide if the product is right for you.

So here are some reviews for the Ugly Stik fishing rod.

At Walmart.com a reviewer is a huge fan of the Ugly Stik, saying it’s "simply amazing" and "I…have never been disappointed by the performance of any of my uglies… I recently had my ultralight break, which was good and bad news for me, as I have had that pole for about 15 years….They will provide you with years of good times, even if abused…"

This review mirrors my own thoughts about the Ugly Stik. You just can’t go wrong with a few of these in your fishing gear.

Field & Stream reviewed the Ugly Stik along with six other rods, in an article called "Give Me a Break." The Shakespeare Ugly Stik was the only one out of all seven rods that didn’t snap, even after 55 pounds of stress was put on it, and it was also the cheapest of the seven rods.

The reviewers at Cabelas.com give the Ugly Stik high average scores, most liking the rod’s strength and price. Only a few people posting reviews here dislike the Shakespeare Ugly Stik, and they don’t seem to have any common issues or complaints as to why.

The reviewers at BassProShops.com give the Ugly Stik very high average scores, and even those that seem to be the most critical have commented that the Ugly Stik is a good choice for beginners who don’t require a sensitive rod.

MyFishing-Guide.com calls the Ugly Stik "one of the best" fishing rods and also says the rod is "durable and lightweight."

How to Take Care of Your Fishing Rod

There are some basic tips to keeping any fishing rod maintained. Most of these aren’t specific to any particular fishing rod simply because keeping a fishing rod is good condition is just about the same for every kind of rod.

You want to make sure your rod works right every time you take it out and if you don’t keep it up properly, you’re eventually going to run into problems. The trick is to not skimp on the maintenance because a good rod should last for years.

1. Keep a case for your rods and keep your rods in it. If you store a rod in your boat, make sure your boat stays out of the summer heat when it’s sitting.

2. Keep your rod out of the sun and the weather, and make sure it’s completely dry before your store it.

3. Keep your real seats lubricated with something that will keep it from corroding. WD40 will work fine.

4. Never reel your sinkers or baits all the way to the tip of the rod because you might damage or fracture the tip of the rod.

5. Stick to the recommended line rating of your rod. Going over the line rating might cause your rod to fail, and who wants that?

6. If you catch your line on something and it won’t release, make sure to point the tip of the rod directly at the snag area and pull back along the axis of the rod. This will put the majority of the stress on the reel and possibly save your rod. You’ll either free the snag or break the line, but not ruin your rod. Don’t try to free a snag with the tip of your rod, unless your lure cost more than your rod. We all know there are some very reasonably priced fishing rods out there and some very expensive lures.

7. Keep your hands on the handle when you’re fighting with a fish. Otherwise, you’ll mess with the way the rod is distributing the pressure over the length of the rod and you might cause it to break or crack.

8. Don’t fish during an electrical storm. Your graphite rod can conduct electricity. You might not ruin your rod, but then again, you might not be around to care that you didn’t.

Ugly Stik History

The Ugly Stik by Shakespeare is the #1 selling fishing rod of all time. The history of the Ugly Stik tells why.

It was 1976 when the Ugly Stik tubular fishing rod was introduced. At the time, I was 2 years old so I can’t say fishing was a great pastime of mine then. In March that year, Fishing Tackle Trade News published the following quote about the Ugly Stik. "The Ugly Stik…may be the most remarkable product of the last two decades."

The Ugly Stik was the first fishing rod to feature a clear tip and ferruless construction and it was made using the Howald Process.

The Howald Process was a concept patented by Arthur Howald and it was a special way of making fiberglass rod blanks.

Shakespeare used the Howald Process, requiring a spiraled graphite core which provided lots of hoop strength, and extruded fiberglass over the outside, which finished in a solid fiberglass tip. This rod, unlike most part-graphite rods from that time period, was tough and very nearly unbreakable. It wasn’t a good looking rod, but it was strong and it became the still popular Ugly Stik.

In 1985, the forerunner of today’s Ugly Stik Lite was introduced. That year, Shakespeare also introduced Ugly Stik Tiger rods for big game fishing.

Just one year later, in 1986, the Ugly Stik Jr. kits were created and introduced so kids could join their dads on more fishing trips.

A change in corporate identity in 1996 didn’t phase the Ugly Stik and the Ugly Stik Lite rods joined the market.

In 1999, Shakespeare introduced rod kits for kids based on the Warner Brothers "Looney Tune" characters, and the Ugly Stik 100% Graphite rods and Ugly Stik Custom rods.

Welcome to Toughest Fishing Rods

Get a tough fishing rod. Get a good deal.

People fish for many different reasons: challenge, relaxation, enjoyment, competitiveness. They also fish in many different ways, using a variety of techniques and tools. Rods come in different sizes and strengths, as do reels.

But if you want to land the big fish, you have to pick a tough fishing rod. Flimsy rods just won’t cut it when you’re trying to reel in the big one.

A weak fishing rod can ruin anybody’s fishing trip, but there’s nothing that breaks a fisherman’s heart faster than to see their best catch slip away because their fishing rod couldn’t hold up under the strain.

That’s why you need the TOUGHEST FISHING RODS you can get when you head out to the lake for a good day of fishing.

Nothing less will do.
